Manchester United face rivals Leeds United in their first friendly of the summer on Saturday.
The Red Devils endured a dismal campaign last season and head coach Ruben Amorim will be desperate to see his side impress during pre-season, ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
United – who finished 15th in the top flight table last term – start the season with a game against Arsenal at Old Trafford, before facing Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the first two months.
Amorim has already added Matheus Cunha to his squad since the start of the summer transfer window, but it has now emerged that United are hoping to land another impressive signing.
According to Argentinian outlet Clarin via SportWitness, United are hoping to tie up a deal to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
It is claimed that Amorim has given the green light to a move for the Argentine, who is expected to depart Villa Park this summer.
Martinez, 32, joined Villa from Arsenal back in 2020 and has since played more than 200 times for the club across all competitions, keeping 70 clean sheets.
The report claims that Martinez has ‘everything ready’ to make the move from Villa to United this summer.
The Argentina international – who won the World Cup in 2022 – has a release clause of around £21.6 million in his current contract, which is set to expire in 2029.
It is claimed, however, that the Red Devils may end up paying more than that to sign the goalkeeper.
Current United ‘keeper Andre Onana has struggled since arriving in England two years ago.
Spanish giants Barcelona and Turkish champions Galatasaray are both also said to be interested in Martinez, who also has admirers in Saudi Arabia.
