Manchester United take a commanding 3-0 lead into their Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night.
The Red Devils produced a fine display to comfortably beat their opponents in the Basque Country in the first leg last week, and Ruben Amorim’s side are therefore well on course to reach the final where they could face Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Domestically, however, United continue to struggle and were beaten 4-3 by European hopefuls Brentford in their last outing.
Midfielder Mason Mount netted his first goal of the season during the defeat against the Bees, as the Englishman continues to struggle since swapping Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford.
According to Football Insider, however, the midfielder has retained the backing of Amorim who believes he can still succeed in Manchester.
Mount, 26, joined United from Chelsea in 2023, having broken into the Blues’ first team and won the Champions League in 2021.
Since moving to United, though, his form has dipped considerably and he has also struggled with frequent injury problems.
In total Mount has played just 41 times for United, scoring twice and providing a single assist.
This season he has featured just 21 times across all competitions, starting only five Premier League matches.
United bosses are said to be keen to move some of their highest earners on this summer, and Mount’s £250,000-per-week deal puts him in that bracket.
The report claims, however, that Amorim still believes the England international can play a part in his side in the future.
Mount’s current deal is set to run until 2028, with the midfielder having signed a long-term contract when United signed him from their rivals for a fee of around £55 million less than two years ago.
