Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been at the centre of one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas, with both Manchester United and Chelsea reportedly chasing the player.

The Red Devils agreed a fee of £73 million with the Spanish side early on in the window, but the former Ajax man reportedly refused a move to Old Trafford.

That was when Chelsea entered into the equation, and it was initially claimed that the Dutchman was more interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.

De Jong is said to be very unhappy with Barcelona

Another huge obstacle for both Premier League sides was the La Liga giants’ financial situation, with De Jong owed a reported £14 million in deferred wages.

It is claimed that Barca are insisting that the player takes a 50% wage cut and accepts just £6 million as opposed to the £14 million he is owed.

The player now appears to have changed his mind once again, though, as Metro claims that he has told his Barcelona teammates that he is likely to join Erik ten Hag’s side.

The report claims that the 25-year-old has come around to the idea of a reunion with Ten Hag, who he played under in Amsterdam.

United are believed to be quietly confident of securing a deal for the player, with an agreement potentially coming as soon as this week.
