Premier League clubs will now have to wait until Monday 16 June to finalise any new signings after the transfer window closed on Tuesday.
The window had opened earlier than usual this year to allow clubs competing in the FIFA Club World Cup to make signings, but sides will now have to wait until it reopens on Monday.
Manchester United are among the English top flight clubs to have already made a signing this summer, namely forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves.
Head coach Ruben Amorim is clearly keen to make further additions to his squad, though, and it appears that United could soon sign a Championship star.
According to GiveMeSport, the Red Devils could be able to sign Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney this summer as the midfielder is set to be able to leave The Riverside.
The report claims that the 22-year-old will be allowed to join a new club during the upcoming summer window after Boro failed to achieve promotion to the Premier League last term.
Hackney featured in 43 of Middlesbrough’s 46 Championship matches last term and was one of their most impressive performers, but they ultimately missed out on the play-offs and Michael Carrick has since departed the club.
The Englishman is a product of Boro’s youth academy and has now played more than 100 times for the Yorkshire side at senior level, as well as spending time on loan at Scunthorpe United.
While the defensive midfielder is under contract until 2027, the report claims that the player is set to be allowed to depart The Riverside before the start of next season.
United are therefore monitoring the player’s situation, however they will not learn Boro’s asking price until after the upcoming Under-21 European Championships, during which Hackney will be part of Lee Carsley’s England squad.
Middlesbrough are set to consider Hackney’s performances at that tournament to determine their asking price for the midfielder.
