Manchester United are reportedly ready to reap the benefits of Rafa Benitez’s dismissal at Real Madrid yesterday by offering a club-record £75m-plus for Wales international Gareth Bale.

The 13-time Premier League champions, who kick-started 2016 with a 2-1 win over Swansea City at the weekend, have been long-term admirers of the Madrid winger since he left Tottenham for a world record transfer fee of £85.3m back in 2013.

The 26-year-old, who has 56 international caps for Chris Coleman’s Wales, has scored nine goals in 13 league appearances for the La Liga giants so far this season.

Monday night’s brutal sacking of former Liverpool boss Benitez has thought to have upsetted a number of key players at the Bernabeu, including Wales ace Bale, for which Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal hopes he can latch onto by bidding an extraordinary amount of money this month in a bid to tempt him back to the Premier League.
