Manchester City must snap up these 2 La Liga stars in January

Pep Guardiola will be pretty satisfied with his first three months in English football, having taken over from Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City in the summer.

The former Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager led his side to ten straight wins at the start of the campaign and, despite a tricky spell which saw them go winless in six games, they have won two of their last three league games to sit third in the table.

During their frustrating run, Guardiola’s side lost their only league game of the season so far at Tottenham, and also suffered a 4-0 hammering away at Barcelona in the Champions League.

Already, questions were being asked of Guardiola’s suitability to the English game, but he soon answered them when his men beat Luis Enrique’s side 3-1 at the Etihad a few weeks ago to all but seal their place in the last 16.

City are just a point adrift of leaders Chelsea after leaving it late to beat Crystal Palace at the weekend and, with a game against Antonio Conte’s Blues coming up in a few weeks, Guardiola’s side will fancy their chances of hitting the summit once again.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, many are speculating as to who Guardiola could bring in to strengthen his side, so here are TWO La Liga players the City boss should look to sign in January…

Aymeric Laporte

Manchester City were unable to get a deal done for young centre-back Aymeric Laporte in the summer but, given Vincent Kompany’s persistent injury troubles, Guardiola may try again in January.

Although John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have done well together this season, injury or suspension could cause issues given the lack of alternative options.

Thus, Guardiola may look at 22-year-old Laporte, who is widely regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in the world.

The French Under-21 international signed a new deal in the summer, which includes a hefty buyout clause, yet if Guardiola wants his man and seriously believes in his ability, it’s a fee worth paying.

Ivan Rakitic

The Barcelona midfielder has won two La Liga titles and the Champions League since moving to the Nou Camp in 2014, but it’s clear that he hugely respects City boss Guardiola.

The 28-year-old has been a key cog in Luis Enrique’s midfield since his move from Sevilla two years ago, and he continues to go from strength to strength with the Spanish giants.

Rakitic has already appeared 124 times for Barcelona in little over two seasons there, proving both how consistent his performances are, and how integral he is to the dynamic of the Barca midfield.

However, his like for Guardiola could open the door for City to test Barcelona’s resolve in the coming transfer window.

The 28-year-old would be a sensational addition to the City midfield, and it’s a deal Guardiola should try and strike in January.
