It’s been an up and down season for United, with inconsistency their biggest problem throughout the campaign.

Despite the decent football they are playing now, many believe they are still one or two players short of mounting a proper challenge at the top of the Premier League.

One of those areas is a centre back to partner club captain Harry Maguire who is by far United’s best centre back.

According to ESPN, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named three players on a shortlist to sign this summer as he looks to improve the defensive capabilities of his squad.

Nathan Ake

Nathan Ake, currently plays his football at Bournemouth having made a permanent switch to the Cherries from Chelsea back in 2017. The Dutch international is by far the South Coast side’s best centre back, and despite the team battling relegation has put in many a top performance this term.

Tyrone Mings

Ironically, Mings was also playing his football at Bournemouth before being loaned to Aston Villa last January to help them gain promotion to the Premier League. His impressive performances called for Villa to sign the Englishman permanently and he has been a stalwart at the back all season for Villa.

Alessio Romagnoli

Moving away from the Premier League to Serie A, ESPN have reported that Romagnoli is the third name on Solskjaer’s shortlist. Having started his career at AS Roma, the Italian moved to AC Milan back in 2015. The defender has played right through the ranks at international level and has made 12 senior appearances for his country.
