Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer willing to sell five stars this summer in squad overhaul

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer willing to sell five stars this summer in squad overhaul, according to the Express.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding United in the last week or so, especially since manager Solskjaer seemed so confident of major signings this summer.

However, to bring that sort of calibre of player in, it’s a certainty that the Red Devils will have to let players go. And the Express have listed a total of five players that could be shipped out of Old Trafford this summer.

These decisions would not just be to raise transfer funds, it’s also a tactic to reduce the wage bill amongst the United playing squad. Here are the players below in no particular order…

Jesse Lingard

It would have seen inconceivable two years ago, when local lad and academy graduate was flying for United and a regular England starter. However, he has endured a turbulent 12 months with some terrible stats in terms of goals and assists. Solskjaer could be willing to let Lingard go with the Express reporting Arsenal could be interested.

Phil Jones

Despite signing an improved long-term deal last year, Jones could be coming towards the end of his Manchester United career. He isn’t adored by the fans, with many believing he is simply not good enough for a top-level squad. Injuries have definitely hampered a player, who once showed plenty of promise in a red shirt.

Alexis Sanchez

When we mentioned bringing the wage bill down, it was with Sanchez in mind, who is still earning a tremendously high £400,000-a-week at Old Trafford. He will be difficult to move on with two years on his deal left, but it will make business sense for United to see Sanchez exit the club.

Andreas Pereira

Similar to Phil Jones in many ways, with many United fans believing the Brazilian is not quite at the level for the United team. Some decent performances here and there, but the Express believe Solskjaer will sell Pereira in the transfer window.

Chris Smalling

The sale of Chris Smalling could be more difficult than first expected, as the centre back’s proposed move to AS Roma – who he currently on loan with – potentially fell through last week due to financial issues due to Coronavirus. That being said, there have been reports around Arsenal being interested in the ex Fulham defender.
