Manchester United are reportedly edging closer on agreeing a summer deal for Uruguay international striker Edinson Cavani, according to Mercato 365 (via The Metro).

The 13-time Premier League champions, who currently lie just one point behind the division’s top four after defeating arch-rivals Manchester City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, are interested in recruiting the Paris Saint-Germain hitman once the 2015-16 campaign has concluded.

The 29-year-old, who has 74 international caps for his country, has scored an impressive 19 goals and provided four assists in 42 appearances in all competitions for the defending Ligue 1 champions so far this season.

Cavani, who is also thought to be attracting interest from defending Premier League champions Chelsea as well, could be offloaded by the French outfit later this year following the forward’s frustration at not being their first choice striker.

The report suggests that the Red Devils look likely to agree a £39m deal for the former Napoli star.
