Manchester United considered last-ditch swoop for Brighton veteran Glenn Murray before signing Odion Ighalo, according to the Daily Mail.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer always knew he was taking a risk when he let forward players Romelu Lukaku (permanent) and Alexis Sanchez (loan) leave for Inter Milan in the summer.

That decision left United with just three recognised strikers in the way of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and the very inexperienced Mason Greenwood.

It could also be argued that both Martial and Rashford play their best football when being deployed from wide positions.

A back injury sustained by Rashford in January, left the Red Devils desperately short on attacking firepower with so little of the transfer window left.

Rashford sustained a stress fracture in United’s FA Cup replay win over Wolves.

The Old Trafford outfit ended up signing ex-Watford man Ighalo on loan for the rest of the season from Chinese Super League outfit, Shanghai Shenhua.

However, the Daily Mail have reported that United, in desperate need for a short-term fix were close to swooping for Murray of Brighton.

The 36-year-old has not enjoyed too much game time this season, making just 17 appearances in all competitions, many of those off the bench.
