Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has dismissed reports that he could leave the club this summer, and is relishing the competition for places in the team this season.

The right-back had been linked with a move to AS Roma, but wants to stay at Old Trafford after making his first appearance under new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho in the 5-2 pre-season friendly win over Galatasaray, following his return from Euro 2016 where Italy reached the quarter-final stage.

Darmian told United’s official website: “I think it’s good to have such competition within the squad because there are a lot of good players for every position in a big team.”

The Italian, who joined from Torino in a £13 million deal last summer, can also play on the left-hand side of defence, but struggled to hold down a regular starting spot under Louis van Gaal last term, making 39 appearances in all competitions – scoring one goal.
