Manchester United flop youth team that have turned into golden generation with five key players

Manchester United flop youth team that have turned into golden generation, according to the Manchester Evening News

Back in the 2015/2016 campaign, Nicky Butt lead a United youth side with high hopes in the UEFA Youth League.

They got off to a flying start with a 3-0 win at PSV Eindhoven, only to come up short with a 5-0 thrashing in the reverse home fixture and a equally disappointing 4-0 loss to CSKA Moscow.

The youth team ended up crashing out at the group stages of the competition having not won a single home game.

Fast-forward four seasons and five of the current crop are playing first team Premier League football, and many others who are carving out a good career in the game.

Does this man need any introduction. After bursting on the scene in the Europa League back in that same campaign against Midgtylland in the Europa League, scoring on his debut, the striker has never looked back. Now United’s main man in attack, Rashford has had a fine season in front of goal scoring 19 goals in all competitions.

Scott McTominay

McTominay’s career highlight came just a short weeks ago when he scored an incredible goal to cap off an emphatic afternoon beating rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in the Premier League. The Scotland international has managed to secure a regular starting place in the United midfield and has now made over 50 first team appearances in a United shirt.

Axel Tuanzebe

After making his United debut in the FA Cup in January 2017, Tuanzebe had two separate loan spells at Aston Villa. The second of which was very successful with the young centre back playing a key role in bringing the midlands-based team out of the Championship back to the top flight. This has prompted Solskjaer to keep him in his squad this campaign.

Dean Henderson

Henderson may not have made a first team appearance, but he simply had to be included on this list. Playing his football for Premier League outfit Sheffield United on loan, having spent last campaign with them gaining promotion. Henderson’s performances have prompted calls for an England call-up, the Red Devils have a top young keeper on their hands.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Fosu-Mensah made his first team debut in the same season as Rashford and looked like the real deal playing at both centre back and right back. Loan spells followed to Crystal Palace and Fulham and in recent times he has also made his full international debut for Holland too. However, this season has been a disappointing one for the young defender with a cruciate ligament injury keeping him out for most the season.
