Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year deal at the club.

The 34-year-old’s contract had been due to expire this month with the Englishman being linked with a move to Australia with Perth Glory, but now he has put pen-to-paper for another year at Old Trafford, where he will work under new manager, Jose Mourinho, who was appointed last month.

Carrick said: “I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing. It’s great to have the opportunity to work under Jose Mourinho.

“I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support.”

The former West Ham United and Tottenham midfielder has been with United since July 2006, making 421 appearances in 10 years with the Red Devils, including 42 outings last term.

Carrick shared the holding role with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, but doubts were cast over his future with no talks over a new deal, and with United being linked with a move for Renato Sanches, who eventually joined Bayern Munich.
