Manchester United have reportedly offered former Germany international ace Bastian Schweinsteiger £9.6m to leave the club, according to Sport Bild (via the Daily Star).

The Premier League side, who have climbed up to sixth place in the English top-flight standings following Sunday’s 3-1 victory against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last weekend, are understood to be desperate to offload the central midfielder.

The 32-year-old, who earned 121 international caps for his country and won the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Germany, has failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Red Devils so far this season in all competitions.

Schweinsteiger, who has another 18 months remaining on his current deal, is understood to have rejected the offer having returned to training with his United team-mates and is instead seeking to see out the rest of his contract – which will pocket him £15.7m.

The report suggests manager Jose Mourinho, who deems the midfielder surplus to requirements at Old Trafford this term, is trying to pay the German off so he has an extra £6m to spend ahead of the forthcoming January transfer window.
