Manchester United preparing bid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this week

Alderweireld is a key player for both club and country.

Manchester United are reportedly plotting an offer for Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the Express.

The Premier League side, who have signed defender Diogo Dalot (FC Porto), midfielder Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk) and goalkeeper Lee Grant (Stoke City) so far this summer transfer window, have once again been linked with attempting to lure the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back to Old Trafford ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 29-year-old, who has 82 international caps for his country, made 21 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season.

Alderweireld, who arrived at White Hart Lane back in July 2015 following his reported £11.5m move from Atletico Madrid, has scored six goals in 109 games overall for Tottenham.

The defender has featured for Belgium five times at this summer’s 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia, and could face England on Saturday in the third-place play-off game.

After Belgium were defeated 1-0 by France in their World Cup semi-final on Tuesday, the report claims United are now ready to make their move on their top defensive transfer target.

The Red Devils want to kick start proceedings this week, despite the World Cup not being over, with the club looking to splash out around £50m for the Belgian’s services, though Spurs want £60m.

Alderweireld remains contracted to Tottenham until June 2019.
