Manchester United: Top 3 players of the Premier League season so far

With no top-flight football to be played until at least April 4 due to the coronavirus pandemic, now is a good chance to look at the season so far.

After a disappointing start to the campaign things are currently looking up at Manchester United.

The Red Devils are 11 unbeaten in all competitions which, along with the possibility of an FA Cup and Europa League win, has put them in contention of a top-four finish.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was under big pressure as recently as January, but recent results have given the Norwegian some breathing space.

But which players have been the standout in United’s season to date? Here’s Shoot’s top-three picks.

3. Bruno Fernandes

He may have only played nine matches for the club, but Bruno Fernandes has made such a huge impact that we’ve had to put him in our top-three. The Portugal international joined from Sporting Lisbon in January for £47million and the team have not tasted defeat since. As well as his goals and creativity, the 25-year-old, who won February’s Premier League Player of the Month award, seems to have lifted his teammates to another level. So despite the little time he has had at Old Trafford, we feel United wouldn’t be in the much healthier position they are now had they not splashed out on Fernandes.

2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka

United spent an eyebrow raising £50million to land Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace in the summer and, despite a mistake here and there, he has certainly not failed to disappoint. The right-back’s one-vs-one defending has been incredible, with even the best forwards in the Premier League finding it almost impossible to beat him. More recently, the 22-year-old has also showed signs that his attacking play and crossing is improving, most notably providing Anthony Martial with an assist in the win at Chelsea. A real contender to make England’s Euro 2020 (if it happens) squad and certainly up there when it comes to United’s Player of the Season.

1. Fred

If there’s an award for the most improved player at United, Fred would win it hands down. Signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2018, the Brazil international underperformed in his first season at Old Trafford. This had many questioning if he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League. But the midfielder has this term answered many of those questions. Not only has he shown big improvements but is performing at a level where he’s become a key player in Solskjaer’s team, so much so we feel he’s been their Player of the Season to date.
