Manchester United have triggered a clause in Belgium international Marouane Fellaini’s contract that will keep him at the club until 2018.
The Premier League side, who currently sit sixth in the English top-flight standings having won their last six league outings in a row, have activated the option to extend his current deal at Old Trafford by a further year.
The 29-year-old, who has 74 international caps for his country, has scored one goal in 21 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils so far this season – netting United’s second strike against Hull City in their EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday night.
Fellaini, who arrived at The Theatre of Dreams back in 2013 following his reported £27.5m switch from Premier League rivals Everton, has netted 14 times in 113 games overall for the club.
Speaking after Tuesday’s victory in the EFL Cup, manager Mourinho said, “He has a very strong mentality and has coped well.
“He knows he is a very important player for me.”
