Manchester United’s best XI after 11 Premier League matches

At this stage of the season, Manchester United fans would have been hoping for more than just five Premier League wins under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese took over from sacked Louis van Gaal in the summer, and expectations were high that the former Chelsea manager could bring the good times back to Old Trafford after a frustrating few years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

However, it’s been a bit of struggle so far, as United have won just five of their opening 11 league games, and are looking likely to miss out on qualifying from their Europa League group.

Defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea have questioned United’s title credentials, and frustrating draws at home to Stoke and Burnley have suggested that they are still lacking something.

Nevertheless, there have been a few decent performances from Mourinho’s men, and their 3-1 win away at Swansea last weekend will go some way to increasing the confidence in the camp.

So, after 11 Premier League games, we’ve decided to piece together the best Man United XI…

GK – David De Gea

Arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, David De Gea has once again shown his credentials as a world-class shot-stopper in the early stages of this season.

The 26-year-old has kept four clean sheets so far, and has made several important saves, none more so than in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool, to preserve either a United win or draw.

He’s a far cry away from the goalkeeper that arrived in England in 2011.

RB – Antonio Valencia

For a makeshift right-back, Antonio Valencia has been pretty solid this season.

United have been struggling at full-back for a while now, but Mourinho seems to trust Valencia, who had started all nine games prior to his injury in the build-up to the Burnley game.

As a former winger, the 31-year-old has seriously improved the defensive side of his game, and is now a solid and reliable full-back at Old Trafford.

CB – Eric Bailly

A few eyebrows were raised when United spent £30 million on Eric Bailly in the summer, but the Ivorian has been a revelation at the back.

The 22-year-old has been very impressive and has adapted well to life in England, and looks set to be a feature in the heart of the United defence for years to come.

He wasn’t at his best against Chelsea the other week, a reminder that he’s still young and got a lot to learn, and an unfortunate injury could rule him out for some time, but the signs are there that Bailly could become a top-quality defender.

CB – Chris Smalling

Chris Smalling’s commitment was questioned by manager Mourinho last week after he missed the Swansea game through injury, but he’s been solid since returning to the side at the end of September.

The 26-year-old has always had potential, hence why Sir Alex Ferguson spent £10 million on him back in 2010, and he’s developed into an England international and United regular in recent seasons.

A dependable centre-half who’s strong in the air and authoritative of his backline, Smalling could strike up an excellent partnership with Bailly when the latter returns from injury.

LB – Daley Blind

Mourinho clearly doesn’t fancy England left-back Luke Shaw, and the United manager’s recent comments aren’t going to go down well with the 21-year-old.

Subsequently, Daley Blind is likely deputise at left-back when Smalling returns from injury to partner Marcos Rojo, and he’s shown at times since his move to Old Trafford in 2014 that he’s more than capable of playing there.

The Dutch international had a shocker against Chelsea, as did most of the United team, but he can do a job at left-back, and has probably been better there this season than anyone else.

CDM – Ander Herrera

An unfortunate red card against Burnley marred what had, up to that point, been a decent season for Ander Herrera.

He ran the show against Liverpool back last month and, although he was below his best against Chelsea, he has established himself as Mourinho’s first choice defensive midfielder.

If Mourinho can provide some continuity alongside him, if indeed he persists with the two in defensive midfield, it would seriously benefit Herrera in the long run.

CDM – Paul Pogba

What is Paul Pogba’s best position in this United team is a question many people have asked, and are continuing to ask, this season.

The £89 million man has struggled to get going in his second spell at Old Trafford, although recent weeks have suggested that he might be beginning to find his feet.

An excellent display against Fenerbahce last month, alongside Michael Carrick, could suggest that he needs someone steady and composed next to him, especially if Mourinho wants to play Wayne Rooney or Juan Mata as a number ten.

Nevertheless, there have certainly been improvements from Pogba in recent weeks, but more of those are needed if United want to challenge for the title.

RM – Juan Mata

As much as United have got exciting attacking players in their squad, none of them have been outstanding thus far.

However, Juan Mata has done well at Old Trafford so far, this all after a summer of speculation around whether Mourinho would sell him on like he did at Chelsea.

However, the Spanish international has scored twice and got one assists from seven starts, and will be integral in United’s title push this season.

CAM – Wayne Rooney

The debate surrounding whether or not to play Wayne Rooney has been rumbling on for some time now, but his performances this season demonstrate that he is still an important part of the United side.

The England captain has scored once and laid on four assists in the league this season, the most of anyone at United, and his 15 chances created is only bettered by Mata and Pogba.

The 31-year-old has still got an integral part to play in United’s season, and the first 11 games suggests that he’s more important than many people think.

LM – Marcus Rashford

Although the 19-year-old hasn’t scored in his last nine appearances for club and country, Marcus Rashford continues to provide United with a threat going forward.

The England international plays without fear and is always looking to take defenders on, and has registered three Premier League goals so far, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic has more.

Mourinho must manage Rashford to avoid him burning out as the season wears on, given the amount of football and pressure he’s been under in the last 12 months, but he offers United something else going forward, and just beats good friend Jesse Lingard to this spot.

ST – Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Photo: Paul Roberts / Offside.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic made an excellent start to life in England, netting five goals in his first five matches, but went on a barren spell prior to his brace at Swansea last weekend.

The Swedish international, who has won the league title at every club he’s been at except Malmo, was wasteful in front of goal at times during his six-game goalless run, but he hit back with a fine double last weekend.

He’s the main man at United upfront, and there are signs that he’s beginning to click with those just behind him, so expect more Ibrahimovic goals in the near future.
