Monk should give these 3 Leeds stars a chance against Newcastle

Fifth place Leeds United visit second place Newcastle United this evening (7.45pm kick-off) looking to consolidate their spot in the Championship’s top six.

Garry Monk’s men got back to winning ways courtesy of a comfortable 3-0 victory over Preston last weekend, a result which moved them five points clear of Fulham in seventh, and to within two points of Huddersfield Town in third.

Automatic promotion looks to be beyond the Yorkshire outfit this season, but a win over Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle this evening would see the confidence levels go sky-high at the business end of the campaign.

The Magpies are second and ten points clear of David Wagner’s Huddersfield having won 26 of their 41 Championship matches this term.

However, Benitez’s side have won just two of their last six league games, and with five defeats at St James’ Park this season, Monk’s Leeds will go there confident of getting the three points.

Yet, the former Swansea boss may have to make some changes to his side, so here are THREE Leeds stars who deserve a chance against Newcastle tonight…

Stuart Dallas

Leeds midfielder Stuart Dallas came on as a second half substitute in their impressive 3-0 win over Preston last time out, and could earn a recall against Newcastle this evening.

The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international has started just 18 of their 41 Championship matches this term, but with a further 11 substitute appearances, it’s clear that he is an important part of Monk’s squad at Elland Road.

His last 90 minutes saw him net a crucial goal in their 1-1 draw at Ipswich back in February, and Monk may consider bringing him back into the starting eleven tonight.

Liam Bridcutt

Midfielder Liam Bridcutt missed the victory over Preston last weekend due to injury, but Monk may need his control and experience against promotion-chasing Newcastle tonight.

The 27-year-old made his move from Sunderland permanent last summer, and although he spent much of the first half of the campaign on the sidelines due to injury, he has been a vital part of Monk’s midfield, making 20 Championship starts this term.

Kalvin Phillips and Ronaldo Vieira did well against Preston last time out, but against a Newcastle side with pace and power in the middle, more experience may be needed, which is why Bridcutt should return to the side against the Magpies.

Souleymane Doukara

Forward Souleymane Doukara came off the bench to net his sixth Championship goal of the campaign against Preston, and it may be enough to see him clinch a 17th league start of the season against Newcastle.

The 25-year-old has been an excellent alternative to in-form striker Chris Wood this term, but with the New Zealand international being in such great form, it’s been tough for Doukara to command a regular starting place.

However, Wood has failed to net in any of the three games since the international break, and with Leeds in serious need of goals to maintain their top six place, Doukara may come into the starting eleven to give Wood further help and reinforcements upfront against the Magpies.
