Mourinho must give these 3 players a chance against Zorya

Manchester United host Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk in their second Europa League group stage match on Thursday.

Jose Mourinho’s side lost 1-0 to Feyenoord in their opening game of the group stages, and will be hoping to get their first win of their European campaign at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Confidence will be high in the camp after a thumping 4-1 win over champions Leicester City on Saturday – this follows a few weeks of difficulty at Old Trafford, which included the aforementioned Feyenoord loss as well as disappointing league defeats to Manchester City and Watford.

Their opponents currently sit second in the Ukrainian top-flight, having won six of their first nine league matches, as they look to build on their fourth place finish last season.

Based on his team selection for the match against Feyenoord two weeks ago, Mourinho is likely to make a few changes to his starting eleven, so here are THREE players who should be given a chance against Zorya on Thursday…

Ashley Young

The England international has started just once so far under Mourinho, but should be given the chance to impress on Thursday.

Young was one of the standout players during the Louis van Gaal era, and was unlucky not to add to his 30 England caps, such was his form.

However, such is the quality and strength in depth that United have in the midfield area, Young is going to struggle to nail down a place but, if given the opportunity on Thursday, a good performance may give Mourinho something to think about going forward.

Memphis Depay

Ashley Young’s predicament is also one shared by Dutch international Memphis Depay.

There was a lot of optimism surrounding Depay’s arrival at Manchester United last summer after his £25 million move from PSV Eindhoven, such was the quality he showed for both his club and country.

But it just hasn’t happened for him.

Like Young, Depay has started just once this season – in the EFL Cup win over Northampton last week – but some of his better United performances have come in Europe, particularly in the early stages of last season’s ill-fated Champions League campaign.

He’s a player who has undoubted ability, and should get a chance on Thursday.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Morgan Schneiderlin was one of the most sought-after players in the Premier League during his last season at Southampton, and he carried that form into the early stages of his United career.

He made 43 appearances in all competitions last season, but has so far suffered at the hands of United’s investment in the midfield area, and as such has made just one Premier League appearance so far this season.

The French international started the Feyenoord match two weeks ago, and is likely to get another opportunity to showcase his ability on Thursday as part of a make-shift United midfield.
