Mourinho should give these 3 Man United players a chance against Hull

Manchester United go into the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Hull on Tuesday (8pm kick-off) on their best run of form in eight years.

Jose Mourinho’s men made it eight successive victories in all competitions with a 4-0 win over Reading in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, a game which also saw Wayne Rooney equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally of 249 goals at the top of United’s record goal-scorer charts.

Not since 2009 under Sir Alex Ferguson have United won eight straight matches, and they’ll be hot favourites to make it nine at Old Trafford on Tuesday night against a Hull side currently bottom of the Premier League.

The Tigers, under the stewardship of new boss Marco Silva following the departure of Mike Phelan last week, have beaten Exeter, Stoke, Bradford, and Newcastle en route to the last four, which means that they have actually won more League Cup games this season than they have Premier League games.

Hull sit bottom of the top-flight having won just three of their 20 league matches, yet go into Tuesday’s game having beaten Swansea 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Nonetheless, United will be expected to take a lead into the second leg at the KCOM Stadium in two weeks’ time, although Mourinho may make a few changes given that they play Liverpool in the league on Sunday.

Thus, here are THREE Man United players who deserve a chance against Hull tomorrow night…

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Bastian Schweinsteiger got a massive reception when he made just his second appearance of the season in United’s 4-0 victory over Reading on Saturday.

The former German international came off the bench for the final 12 minutes at Old Trafford and, although the game was already won, he slotted seamlessly into the United midfield.

And, with Morgan Schneiderlin looking likely to leave the club, and Michael Carrick unlikely to be able to play three times in a week, Mourinho could be tempted to draft the 32-year-old into his starting eleven against Hull.

Schweinsteiger’s experience and guile in the midfield may be needed against the Tigers, given that they are likely to be tough to break down on Tuesday.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

An injury to Marcos Rojo against Reading means that the Red Devils are slightly light on defensive options, which could see young defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah make his second League Cup start of the campaign.

The 19-year-old came off the bench alongside Schweinsteiger in their victory over Reading on Saturday, and could be drafted into the backline should Luke Shaw remain unavailable, and Daley Blind potentially move to centre-back to replace the injured Rojo.

Fosu-Mensah is a hugely talented player, and may get only his third start of the season under Mourinho on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard

With Hull expected to set up difficult to beat and tough to break down, United may need to stretch the backline and make the pitch as big as possible tomorrow night.

Thus, Mourinho could turn to winger Jesse Lingard in a bid to see off the Tigers.

The 24-year-old hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks, although did grab an assist in the 2-0 win over West Brom back on December 17.

Mourinho is likely to rotate his squad ahead of their Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday and, given that Lingard wasn’t in the 18 for the FA Cup tie against Reading, it may suggest that the United boss is planning on including him against Hull.
