Mourinho should give these 3 Man United players a chance against Leicester

Sixth place Manchester United visit Premier League champions Leicester on Sunday (4pm kick-off) needing all three points in their quest for a top four finish.

Jose Mourinho’s men could only muster a 0-0 draw at home to relegation-threatened Hull on Wednesday night, which saw them remain four points behind fourth place Liverpool.

Nonetheless, with the Reds drawing at home to Chelsea, it was a real chance for the Red Devils to close the gap on the top four, and they’ll go to the King Power Stadium on Sunday once again knowing that three points is a must if they want Champions League football next season.

However, although Claudio Ranieri’s side have struggled in their title defence this season, their home form has been pretty good, as they have won five of their 11 league games at the King Power, losing only three.

Yet, they have lost their last three league matches and have scored only one goal in their last six games, so Mourinho’s men will be confident of securing the victory on Sunday.

Having played on Wednesday night, the United boss could be tempted into making some changes against the Foxes, so here are THREE players who deserve a chance on Sunday…

Chris Smalling

Phil Jones picked up a knock in the 0-0 draw with Hull on Tuesday night, and could be missing for the trip to Leicester on Sunday.

If the England international isn’t passed fit to play, then another England international in Chris Smalling could be called upon.

The 27-year-old appears to have lost his place in the United starting eleven such has been the good form of Jones and Marcos Rojo and, given that Eric Bailly has returned from African Cup of Nations duty, Smalling isn’t going to get many more chances to prove his worth to Mourinho.

Thus, if Jones doesn’t play, Smalling must seize this chance with both hands, otherwise his long-term United career could be in doubt.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial was once again dropped by Mourinho against Hull, and the United boss decided against bringing the Frenchman on when his side were searching for the all-important winner.

Thus, the 21-year-old must be questioning his future at Old Trafford, especially given that he got two assists against Wigan four days before, as well as a few goals over the New Year at home to Middlesbrough and Reading.

Nonetheless, Mourinho may give the French international another opportunity to prove his worth against Leicester on Sunday, as his pace and directness could be exactly what United need to unsettle a Foxes defence that has been far from convincing this season.

He’s unlikely to start up top, but a battle down the left with full-back Danny Simpson is sure to be one Martial relishes should he get a chance on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney

United are hugely reliant on striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so it’s about time some of the other attacking players started chipping in with some more goals.

Thus, Wayne Rooney should get the chance to add goal number 251 to his tally against the Foxes on Sunday.

The England captain broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing goal-scoring record in the 1-1 draw at Stoke two weeks ago, but hasn’t been able to add to that since then.

However, against a Leicester side likely to sit back and try and hit United on the break, Rooney’s creativity and ability to spot a pass may be needed, as Mourinho’s men desperately need all three points in their bid for Champions League football next season.
