Mourinho should give these 3 Man United players a chance against Watford

Manchester United go into this weekend’s clash with Watford off the back of a comfortable 3-0 win over Premier League champions Leicester.

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Juan Mata secured a comprehensive victory for Jose Mourinho’s men, who in turn extended their unbeaten run in the league to 15 games, and also closed the gap on fourth place Arsenal to just two points.

It means that United have the chance to get into the top four for the first time since September with victory over Walter Mazzarri’s Watford on Saturday.

The Hornets themselves have been on a good run, winning two and drawing two of their last four Premier League games, as well as coming into this one off the back of a hard-fought 2-1 win over Burnley last weekend.

Mazzarri’s men won their last away match at Arsenal ten days ago, so United will have to be ready for a tricky encounter at Old Trafford on Saturday.

However, with many games coming up for United, Mourinho may make a few changes to his starting eleven, so here are THREE players who deserve a chance against Watford this weekend…

Michael Carrick

United have seriously struggled to break down the so-called lesser teams at Old Trafford this season, so Michael Carrick’s incredible eye for a pass may be needed against Watford this weekend.

The Red Devils have drawn at home to Stoke, Burnley, West Ham, and Hull already this term, yet they arguably could and perhaps should have won all four games.

Thus, the 35-year-old’s control of the midfield and incredible vision could be the key to trying to unlock the Hornets backline, and if Carrick is given time on the ball to pick a pass, it could have devastating consequences for the visitors.

Carrick should be fresh having not played since their 0-0 draw with Hull last week, and should go into the starting eleven on Saturday.

Marouane Fellaini

Mixing it up and having something slightly different could be vital for United to get past Watford this weekend, so Belgian international Marouane Fellaini could be in line for a recall.

The 29-year-old last started a Premier League game back on January 21 when Mourinho’s men drew 1-1 at Stoke, but since then Fellaini netted the crucial opener against Wigan in their FA Cup fourth round encounter two weeks ago.

Add in that he got the vital second against Hull in their League Cup semi-final at the start of January, and it’s clear that having the presence of Fellaini in the opposition box can cause issues to any backline, such is his ability in the air.

Whether he’ll start remains to be seen, but expect Fellaini to get on the pitch at some stage, especially if United are struggling to get through the Watford defence.

Jesse Lingard

Making the pitch big can also be a good way of breaking down a stubborn defence, so Mourinho could call upon the pace of winger Jesse Lingard on Saturday.

The England international hasn’t started a Premier League game since their 2-0 win over West Ham on January 2, and hasn’t netted for the club in any competition since their 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in the Europa League back in November.

Clearly, Lingard is lacking some form, but getting the ball to his feet out wide to cross, take defenders on, or run towards the by-line may be a good way of opening up the Watford defence.

The 24-year-old is yet to net in the league this term, but utilising his pace and trickery could be key to United getting all three points this weekend.
