Mourinho’s magic, Bilic’s bubble burst? What’s hot and what’s not in the PL

After a mid-week distraction with EFL Cup football, the Premier League returned to our screens at the weekend, and it did not disappoint.

The weekend began with the champions, Leicester, visiting a Man United side with a point to prove off the back of three straight defeats, and well, they made themselves heard. A resounding 4-1 victory left the Red Devils with their heads held high in the early kick-off after a disastrous week.

The Foxes’ visit to Old Trafford set the tone for the rest of the day’s action, with big wins for Liverpool, Man City and, perhaps most spectacularly, Arsenal – who made light work of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side.

There was also an end to the Everton party as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium against an impressive Bournemouth side, with Junior Stanislas once again notching against the Toffees.

Come Sunday and there was just the one fixture for everyone to sink their teeth into, as Southampton made their first trip to the London Stadium and picked up their complementary three points on the way out.

So, what can we take from the weekend’s action? Who impressed and who will be feeling glum this morning? Here is what’s hot and what’s not after a weekend of Premier League football…

The Frenchman has been under a lot of scrutiny since his world record move from Juventus, having struggled – along with the whole side – early in the season.

However, the 23-year-old put in a sensational performance against the champions at Old Trafford on Sunday, playing a big role in Juan Mata’s goal before bagging his first ever for the club. The mesmerising first half performance could well be the catalyst in a big season.

HOT: Charlie Austin

David Sullivan was left rather red-faced on Sunday when the former QPR striker, who Sullivan suggested had no ligaments in his knee when he joined The Saints, scored one and setup another as the South Coast side strolled past West Ham at the London Stadium.

A goal with his only shot in the game shows just how hot Austin’s form is at the moment, with Sunday’s addition making hit five goals in four outings across three different competitions.

The flip-side of Austin’s fine form is the dire situation in East London. In July of this year, West Ham vice chairman, Karren Brady, said: “Be in no doubt, we are part of the most successful stadium migration in history.”

Those comments look rather premature at the moment, with five defeats from six Premier League games so far this season, with their only success being a last minute win against Bournemouth in their first game at the London Stadium, which seems a long time ago now.

After captain Mark Noble described their defence as “laughable”, it is clear that there is a lot to do to fix the problems on and off the pitch, before it become irreparable.

An embarrassing first loss to Arsenal since 2011 left new Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, questioning his side’s attitude, stating that they were not in the right frame of mind from the start.

The former Juventus boss also earmarked his back line as the area most at fault, as Gary Cahill’s woeful back-pass summarised the entire sides performance as the Gunners climbed to third.
