Neil should give these 3 Norwich players a chance in the FA Cup

Under pressure Norwich City manager Alex Neil takes his side to Southampton on Wednesday (7.45pm kick-off) in an FA Cup third round replay.

The Canaries have struggled for form in recent times under the Scottish boss, having lost nine of their last 13 Championship matches, and indeed fallen off the promotion pace.

Norwich are 11th in the table having won 11 and lost 11 of their 26 league games, but they can turn their attentions away from Championship matters tomorrow when they travel to Premier League outfit Southampton in the FA Cup.

Claude Puel’s Saints have themselves gone through something of a sticky patch, having lost their last four top-flight games, although they did beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final last week.

Puel’s men have fallen to 13th in the table after their recent run of poor form, yet will take great confidence from their victory over Jurgen Klopp’s Reds into tomorrow’s encounter.

With Norwich taking on Wolves and Birmingham at home in their next two league games, Neil knows that he must get some wins on the board over the coming weeks to save his job, so he could make a few changes for the trip to St Mary’s tomorrow.

Thus, here are THREE Norwich players who deserve an opportunity in the FA Cup on Wednesday…

Josh Murphy

21-year-old midfielder Josh Murphy was given the nod in the 2-2 draw against Southampton a few weeks ago, and looks set to get another chance against the Saints on Wednesday.

The former England Under-20 international spent the entirety of last season on loan at MK Dons, making 42 league appearances for the club in their ill-fated Championship campaign, which saw them relegated back to League One after just a season in the second tier.

However, Murphy has been used more by Neil this term, and has made 13 appearances for the Canaries so far, nine of which have been in the Championship.

A young player who likes to take defenders on, get the ball into the box, and is dangerous from set pieces, Murphy could be what Norwich need on Wednesday to cause an upset at St Mary’s.

Kyle Lafferty

Kyle Lafferty may have struggled to break into the Norwich first team this season, but he always carries a goal threat when he comes off the bench.

The Northern Ireland international has made just one start this season – in their League Cup clash with Coventry back in September – yet did net in that game and in one of his eight substitute appearances in the Championship, when he scored a late equaliser against Leeds.

The 29-year-old clearly makes an impact when he comes off the bench, and was given an 11 minute cameo role in the draw against Southampton a few weeks ago.

Could he make only his second start of the season at St Mary’s on Wednesday?

Alex Pritchard

Alex Pritchard missed out on a start in the Canaries’ 2-1 defeat to Rotherham at the weekend, but did start the 2-2 draw with Southampton a few weeks ago.

The former England Under-21 international signed from Brentford in the summer, and has netted once and laid on three assists in 13 Championship appearances this season.

Neil is under pressure to turn things around at Carrow Road after a poor run of form, but a victory over Premier League opposition in the FA Cup could bide him time.

Pritchard is clearly a very talented player who can both create and score goals, so expect him to get an opportunity at St Mary’s on Wednesday.
