Newcastle United are close to securing the signature of Anderlecht defender Chancel Mbemba for £8.5m.

The Magpies, who signed Aleksandar Mitrovic from the same club earlier this week, are set to raid the Belgian side once more for the DR Congo international.

However, the deal to bring the highly-rated full-back to St James’ Park is not that straightforward are there is some confusion over his age.

Official sources state that he is 20 but the defender once said he was born “around 1990”, but his date of birth was registered as 1988 in Congo and August 1995 for Anderlecht, giving him four possible birth dates.

Whether he’s 20, 25 or 27 though, Steve McClaren is getting a player that’s impressed both domestically and in Europe the past two seasons.
