Newcastle United have been joined by AS Monaco in the hunt to sign Italy international goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

The Premier League outfit, who lie just two points above the division’s relegation places, are interested in signing the out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain shot stopper in next month’s transfer window.

The 28-year-old, who has 15 international caps for his country, has kept two clean sheets in the two appearances he has made all season for the defending Ligue 1 champions so far this season.

Magpies boss Steve McClaren is understood to be seeking a short-term ‘keeper solution to cover the injured number Tim Krul at St James’ Park; with the want away Sirigu, who is valued at around £7.2m, poised to leave the French capital in January following the impressive form of summer signing Kevin Trapp under boss Laurent Blanc this campaign.

Rock-bottom Premier League side Aston Villa have also expressed an interest in signing the experienced shot stopper in the New Year.
