Newcastle are ready to make a surprise bid for Wes Morgan.

According to a report in The Sun the Leicester skipper is wanted by Rafa Benitez to anchor next season’s Premier League campaign.

Morgan was one of the inspirations behind Leicester’s title success last season and along with Kasper Schmeichel has retained his form through the season about to end.

Benitez is keen to see Morgan’s leadership skills in his defence next season and is preparing an offer for the 33-year-old.

Leicester handed the defender a lucrative three year contract at the start of this season which will be the crux of any transfer move.

With Claudio Ranieri no longer at the club a new manager or Craig Shakespeare may decide that to bring in younger central defenders on smaller wages.

Should that happen Newcastle would be happy to pick up on Morgan’s current contract and arrange a deal with Leicester.
