Newcastle are preparing a bid for Jay Rodriguez.

According to a report in The Chronicle the Southampton winger is a £6m transfer target for Rafa Benitez.

The winger has been a regular this season at St Mary’s but it’s believed that Rodriguez will be moved on in the summer as Southampton seek to freshen up their attacking options.

Rafa Benitez is currently reviewing a number of players believed to be available with the emphasis placed on players who have already played in the Premier League.

The Newcastle boss is looking for tried and tested solutions for next season to ensure that there is no flirting with the relegation zone.

Rodriguez was signed from Burnley in 2012 and was on target at the weekend as Southampton won 2-1 away to relegated Middlesbrough.

With two years left on his contract he won’t be available at a knock down price but it’s understood that if Newcastle firm up their initial interest a deal could be done.
