Newcastle United have appointed former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez as their new boss on a three-year deal.

The club sacked Steve McClaren on Friday morning after the former England manager won only six of his 28 Premier League matches in charge, which has left the Magpies 19th in the Premier League table, one point from safety.

Benitez has managed a number of top clubs across Europe, including Inter Milan and Valencia, and his last job was with Spanish giants Real Madrid, where he was sacked in January.

The Spaniard, who has also previously taken charge of Liverpool, with his honours including the incredible win in the 2005 Champions League final, now returns to England to take the reins at St James’ Park.

The top flight strugglers face a tough trip to league leaders Leicester City on Monday night, before they host arch-rivals Sunderland in vital fixture the following weekend.
