Name: Georginio Wijnaldum
Position: Midfielder
Goal: NEWCASTLE vs Southampton – August 9, 2015
Despite Newcastle United being engulfed in a Premier League relegation battle; currently three points adrift of safety with only eight games remaining, summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum has often been regarded as the Magpies’ saviour this season with some admirable performances.
The first came back in August 2015 on his English top-flight debut at St James’ Park, netting the hosts’ second goal against Southampton on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 season in an eventual 2-2 draw.
After winger Gabriel Obertan was made to fetch the ball deep into the right flank, the Frenchman’s perfectly lofted cross into Saints’ 18-yard area was expertly headed into the far top corner – leaving opposing goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg stunned and rooted to the ground.
That was the Netherlands international’s first of nine league goals so far this campaign, an impressive tally that could prove pivotal come May when the Magpies determine whether they can preserve their Premier League status or suffer relegation into the Championship.
