Newcastle United’s Premier League Player of the Month for February

Name: Andros Townsend
Position: Winger

Townsend joined Newcastle from Tottenham back in January in a deal worth up to £12m.

It was a toss up between the two new signings for Newcastle United’s February Player of the Month – which in all, could prove the Magpies completed some shrewd business during the previous January transfer window come the end of the season.

But just outscoring fellow midfielder and England international Jonjo Shelvey to last month’s award is winger Andros Townsend, who is starting to show glimpses of why the Premier League outfit coughed up £12m for his services in the New Year.

The 24-year-old; who has 10 international caps for the Three Lions, but is an outsider to be included in national team coach Roy Hodgson’s squad for the 2016 UEFA European Championships in France this summer, scored his first goal for his new club against defending league champions Chelsea.

Townsend, who made the switch from Tottenham back in January, put in a decent display for 88 minutes during Steve McClaren’s side’s crucial 1-0 win over West Brom, before netting his team’s consolation goal in the 5-1 drubbing at Stamford Bridge in their next fixture.

However Newcastle will need even more inspiration and encouragement from England duo Townsend and Shelvey if the Magpies are to preserve their Premier League status with just 11 games remaining.
