No better way for Rangers to do the treble than beating Old Firm rivals Celtic

So, it’s down to one team to secure a treble? Okay it’s not quite the same as the others, but if Mark Warburton’s side were to pull off a triple trophy haul, then I have a feeling it’ll be spoken about for a long, long time to come.

With the Scottish Cup draw; which Lubo Moravcik was kept away from, pitting Rangers and Celtic against each other, there’s an opportunity for the Championship winners-elect to test themselves against a title chasing Premiership side. The last time the two sides met, Kenny McDowall was in charge and should never have had that responsibility forced on him.

Rangers will host Old Firm derby rivals Celtic in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on April 17.

This time is different though. This time we’re looking confident and playing with a swagger. We’re grinding out wins when we have to and not conceding sloppy goals. Across the city though, things aren’t as great. Ronny Deila’s side have somehow been dragged into a two-way fight with Aberdeen for the title and are struggling at times.

That’s not to say there aren’t weaknesses in the Rangers side because we are far from the finished article.  With the right selection and a little bit of luck, there could be a third trip to Hampden in the coming months for Rangers fans.

As the season gets closer to it’s conclusion, thoughts will turn to Player of the Year awards and while there are more than a few candidates in the Rangers squad, one who might be overlooked is central defender Rob Kiernan.

The former Ireland Under-21 international has only continued to get better and better as the season has progressed, plus his partnership with Danny Wilson looks more and more convincing. He still makes mistakes now and then, but he has been a solid performer as Rangers close in on a return to the Premiership. Jason Holt or Martyn Waghorn have both been excellent all season too; although Waghorn’s form did dip a little before he was injured.

Another player who would be in with a shout of any award would be Lee Wallace. The Rangers captain has looked like an entirely different player this season and was unfortunate to miss out on the Scotland squad for the upcoming friendlies. At this stage of the season I think it’s better if key players like Wallace aren’t included for international friendlies. It would be harsh to lose the player for the run-in with an injury picked up whilst away.

Finally, there’s a campaign by Hearts fans to get “Hibsed” into the Oxford English Dictionary. After seeing how Alan Stubbs “Hibsed it” in the league, I’m sure that’s something everyone can get behind!
