There are still three months until the transfer window reopens, but already there is speculation surrounding the future of certain Premier League stars.
The international break takes places over the next fortnight, giving Premier League managers some time to identify those members of the squad that they want to retain for the season, and those that could be sold in January.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola may be one boss using the next few weeks to do exactly that.
His tenure at the Etihad has got off to a great start, winning their first six Premier League matches and remaining unbeaten in Europe, yet a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend has thwarted their early season momentum.
Guardiola may consider getting rid of some players in January to possibly make room for more signings, so here are THREE players he should let go in the window…
Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure became one of Manchester City’s most important players when he signed from Barcelona in 2010, and heavily contributed to their two Premier League title successes in 2012 and 2014.
However, he is not anywhere near Guardiola’s first team at the moment, for reasons that have been widely publicised, and has been left out of their UEFA Champions League squad for the group stages – his only appearance of the season came in City’s 1-0 second leg victory over Steaua Bucharest back in August.
Clearly, it’s time for Toure to leave Manchester and pursue his career somewhere else.
His contract expires at the end of this season, and it would take a remarkable change of circumstances for that to be extended.
Fabian Delph
Fabian Delph’s move to Manchester City last summer was met by a few raised eyebrows from a number of football fans, even more so given that a few days earlier, he said he would remain Aston Villa captain for the upcoming season.
Although he’s had a few decent runs in the side, he’s never been able to nail down a regular first team place, sometimes because of injury, but mainly because of the immense quality City have in the midfield area.
Delph is a good player, and has shown that on occasion at City, but he’s not going to seriously develop if he’s not playing week in, week out.
And, at City, that just isn’t going to happen.
He may feel that he’s learnt a lot since Guardiola’s arrival, but it’s difficult to know whether he can implement that education when he’s not playing. It’s time to move on.
Jesus Navas
Jesus Navas signed for City back in 2013, and there was a lot of optimism surrounding his move to The Etihad.
However, he has never really lived up to those expectations. He’s a good player, but he’s never really shown enough to suggest he’s a great player.
His final delivery is regularly not good enough and, when you’ve got as much quality as Guardiola has at his disposal, you have to be better than that or you will be out of the side.
He regularly gets into the match-day squad for City and even started their defeat at Spurs at the weekend, so Guardiola clearly sees something in him, but I believe it would be better for Navas to look for a move elsewhere.
