Pochettino should give these 3 Tottenham players a chance against AS Monaco

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham know that only victory will suffice from their trip to Monaco on Tuesday if they want to remain in the Champions League.

Spurs have won just one of their opening four group matches and face Leonardo Jardim’s men this week hoping to avenge their 2-1 defeat to the French side back in September.

Tottenham’s tally of four points sees them third in Group E and, with second place Bayer Leverkusen hosting bottom side CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, Pochettino knows that a win is must for his side to stand any chance of qualification.

However, they will go into the game in high spirits after their comeback victory over West Ham on Saturday. Harry Kane’s late brace sealed a fine 3-2 win for the hosts at White Hart Lane, a result that preserves their unbeaten start to the league season, and puts them just four points behind leaders Chelsea.

For all the promise Spurs have shown in the league this season, they have been very poor in Europe, but Tuesday represents an opportunity for Spurs to prove themselves on the European stage.

Their win over West Ham saw several players, who aren’t always in the starting eleven, play starring roles, so here are THREE Spurs players that should be given a chance against Monaco on Tuesday…

Son Heung-min

Although he hasn’t scored the goals or performed as well as he did at the start of the campaign in recent weeks, Son Heung-min made a big impact from the bench on Saturday.

The 24-year-old played an enormous part in both of Harry Kane’s goals against West Ham, with the Englishman’s first coming from Son’s great work and cross from the left, and his second from the penalty spot when the South Korea international drew a foul from Havard Nordtveit.

Vincent Janssen hasn’t done enough to warrant a start on Tuesday and, with Kane still looking short of match fitness, Son could be their main man, and must come back into the starting eleven.

Kieran Trippier

Spurs have avoided defeat in just two of their four Champions League games this season, and right-back Kieran Trippier has started both of those games.

The 26-year-old has impressed in the Spurs shirt so far this season and, although Kyle Walker is playing well this season, Trippier deserves the chance again at right-back.

Walker was not at his best against West Ham and, with Trippier an arguably better crosser of the ball in the final third and with Spurs in need of a win, the former Burnley man deserves a shot on Tuesday.

Harry Winks

Tottenham have really struggled in Europe this season, and could do with the same sort of boost Harry Winks gave them against West Ham when they visit Monaco on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old was outstanding in the Spurs midfield on Saturday and deservedly got his first Premier League goal to help the home side to a 3-2 win.

With Spurs lacking something in Europe so far, Winks may get another chance to make a similar impact on Tuesday.

Although it would be a bold move, he proved on Saturday not to be overawed by the occasion, and he has had minutes in Europe already this season, so it wouldn’t be a compete step into the unknown.
