Pochettino should give these 3 Tottenham players a chance against Liverpool

Tottenham are looking to clinch their first piece of silverware in eight years this season, and go to Liverpool on Tuesday in a bid to progress in the League Cup.

Spurs’ last trophy came in the same competition back in 2008, when they beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley thanks to goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Jonathan Woodgate.

However, that was at a time when Spurs weren’t challenging for the Premier League title, and the expectations were somewhat lower than what they are now under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

His Spurs side finished third in the top-flight last year, just being pipped to second by North London rivals Arsenal, and in turn qualified for the Champions League for the first time since 2010.

They’ve started this season strongly as well, picking up five wins from the first nine league games, and drawing the other four.

Pochettino’s side find themselves a point adrift of Tuesday’s opponents Liverpool in the league table, and will likely make changes to their team as they bid for a place in the last eight.

Here are THREE Spurs players who deserve a chance against Liverpool on Tuesday…

Kevin Wimmer

The injury to Toby Alderweireld has freed up a spot at centre-back and, although Eric Dier got the nod against Bournemouth, Kevin Wimmer should be given the chance against Liverpool.

The 23-year-old’s only start of the season came in the 5-0 win over Gillingham in the previous round of this competition – he’s actually played more times for Austria this season than he has for Spurs.

The defender showed what he could do last season when he came in for Jan Vertonghen, and he deserves an opportunity to stake a claim to be Alderweireld’s replacement by playing at Anfield on Tuesday.

Josh Onomah

Tottenham’s wealth of attacking talent has restricted Josh Onomah to just one start so far this season, alongside three substitute appearances.

Like Wimmer, he started in the win over Gillingham, impressing throughout and getting the fourth goal for Spurs that night.

He is often on the bench for Tottenham in the Premier League, so he is clearly well regarded by Pochettino, and should get a chance on Tuesday to impress the former Southampton manager.

Michel Vorm

Huge Lloris is undoubtedly the number one goalkeeper at Tottenham, but it’s integral that you’ve got an able deputy as back up.

And that’s where Michel Vorm comes in.

The former Swansea shot-stopper had to be ready to replace Lloris on the opening day at Everton, and started the subsequent two league games for Spurs, conceding just the one goal, which was against Liverpool.

As the games come thick and fast, although goalkeeper is not an area you need to keep rotating, Vorm should get minutes on the pitch in case he is called upon again like at the start of the season.

He played in the game against Gillingham, and deserves to retain his spot as the Cup goalkeeper.
