Pochettino should give these 3 Tottenham players a chance against Man City

Tottenham go to Manchester City on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off) hoping to record a seventh successive Premier League victory.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side thumped West Brom 4-0 last weekend to move up to second in the table, but they remain seven points behind Chelsea after the league leaders dispatched champions Leicester 3-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Spurs haven’t tasted defeat in the Premier League since they last visited Manchester, going down 1-0 to Jose Mourinho’s United on December 11, and since then they have picked up 18 points from 18 to propel themselves into the title race.

However, they’ll find it tough on Saturday against Pep Guardiola’s City, despite the Citizens losing 4-0 at Everton last week, their fifth league defeat of the campaign.

Guardiola’s men have won their last three home league games, dating back to their one and only defeat at the Etihad this season to Chelsea on December 3.

Nonetheless, Pochettino’s men will go there hopeful of recording a 14th league win of the season, although they’ll have to do it without Jan Vertonghen, who has been ruled out with an ankle problem.

Thus, the Spurs boss may need to rotate his squad, so here are THREE players who deserve a chance against City on Saturday…

Kevin Wimmer

Jan Vertonghen’s injury will free up a position in the heart of the Tottenham defence on Saturday, and it’s a position that could be filled by Kevin Wimmer.

The 24-year-old has struggled for game time at White Hart Lane this season given the good form of Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, and Eric Dier, but Pochettino may need the Austrian international at the Etihad Stadium if he’s to play three at the back again.

The success Spurs have had in recent weeks suggests that he will and, if so, Wimmer could be the man to come in, given he did against Arsenal back in November, and indeed against Chelsea a few weeks after that.

Although he struggled a bit in those games, Wimmer clearly knows the system and what is needed for it to work, so he’s clearly the obvious choice to fill in for Vertonghen.

Ben Davies

Alternatively, Pochettino could call upon Welsh international Ben Davies to occupy the third centre-back position.

The 23-year-old is another who has struggled for minutes on the pitch this season – in fact, he’s only spent 344 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League thus far.

Nonetheless, Davies played as part of a back three for Wales in last summer’s European Championships, which was a defence praised by many for its solidarity and understanding of each other’s roles in the system.

And, with it unlikely that Davies is going to get ahead of Danny Rose in the left-back pecking order, Pochettino may use the Welshman in his back three on Saturday.

Moussa Sissoko

Vertonghen’s injury could force Pochettino to change to a back four, and thus a position in the midfield could become available.

And Moussa Sissoko will be one of those players hoping to benefit from the Belgian international’s misfortune against City on Saturday.

The former Newcastle man hasn’t set the world alight since a £30 million move from St James’ Park last summer, yet there have been glimpses of his ability in recent substitute appearances, most notably against Manchester United last month.
