Pochettino should give these 3 Tottenham players a chance against Southampton

Mauricio Pochettino welcomes his former club to White Hart Lane on Sunday (2.15pm kick-off) as Tottenham host Southampton in the Premier League.

Spurs are currently second in the division but could find themselves 13 points behind league leaders Chelsea by the time they kick off on Sunday, with Antonio Conte’s Blues playing at Stoke the day earlier.

Nonetheless, Pochettino’s men will be confident of keeping the pressure on the West London outfit whatever their result given that they have the best home record in the top-flight, and have won their last nine league games at White Hart Lane.

However, they will also be wary of a Southampton side that has beaten Arsenal and Liverpool away from home this term, and pushed Manchester United all the way in the League Cup final last month, eventually losing 3-2 to the Red Devils.

Claude Puel’s side have won their last two Premier League away matches as well, beating Sunderland and Watford, so they’ll be confident of going to North London and getting a positive result on Sunday.

Despite this, Spurs will go in as favourites, but Pochettino will have a few selection dilemmas ahead of Sunday’s game, and thus may make some changes to his starting eleven.

So, here are THREE Tottenham players who deserve a chance against Southampton on Sunday…

Kieran Trippier

Although Kyle Walker has been in excellent form for Tottenham this season, Kieran Trippier has also performed well when called upon.

The former Burnley man has only started once in the Premier League for Spurs this term, but in that game he produced two sensational crosses to assist two of Harry Kane’s three goals against Watford on New Year’s Day.

The 26-year-old was also in the side that breezed past Millwall 6-0 on Sunday, where he registered another assist, so he’ll certainly be giving Pochettino something to think about, and it could be enough to see him get another league start on Sunday.

Son Heung-min

Harry Kane’s injury against Millwall on Sunday has opened the door for someone to stake a claim for a regular starting place upfront, and Son Heung-min looks in the best position to take that chance.

The South Korean international bagged a hat-trick in their 6-0 drubbing of the Lions at the weekend to take his tally to 14 for the season, seven of which have come in the Premier League.

However, he has made just 14 starts in the league this term under Pochettino, although hasn’t got in the starting eleven in their last two league matches against Stoke and Everton.

Nonetheless, Son’s excellent display against Millwall and overall solid season could see him get the nod in the striking role against the Saints.

Vincent Janssen

If Pochettino decides against starting Son Heung-min, Vincent Janssen could be waiting in the wings for a rare Premier League start.

The Dutch international finally scored a goal from open play in the 6-0 thrashing of Millwall on Sunday, and although he has netted four times previously for Spurs since moving from AZ last summer, all four were from the penalty spot.

Undoubtedly, that goal against the Lions will give Janseen much-needed confidence after a tricky start to life at White Hart Lane, and it could be exactly the sort of boost which sees him go on a scoring run in the near future.

Pochettino may back the 22-year-old to lead the line against Southampton on Sunday.
