Pochettino should give these 3 Tottenham players a chance in the FA Cup

Mauricio Pochettino takes his Tottenham side across London on Sunday to face Championship side Fulham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Spurs have struggled for form in recent weeks following their seven-match winning streak over the Christmas and New Year period, winning just two of their last six games in all competitions.

Pochettino’s men went down 1-0 in Gent on Thursday to leave their Europa League hopes hanging in the balance, and with the North London side sitting third in the Premier League and ten points behind leaders Chelsea, the FA Cup arguably represents their best opportunity for silverware this term.

However, they’ll have to be firing on all cylinders to get past Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham, who currently sit eighth in the Championship and just six points adrift of the play-off places.

The Cottagers go into Sunday’s clash having won their last two league games, and three of their last four at Craven Cottage.

Jokanovic’s men have already knocked out Premier League opposition in the form of Hull City in the competition, so Pochettino will know that his side will need 100% application to avoid a cup upset on Sunday.

Nonetheless, the Spurs boss is likely to make a few changes to his starting eleven, so here are THREE Tottenham players who deserve a chance in the FA Cup this weekend…

Kevin Wimmer

You would have thought that Jan Vertonghen’s injury would have given Austrian international Kevin Wimmer more first team opportunities, but it hasn’t quite worked out like that for the 24-year-old.

Vertonghen suffered an ankle problem in their 4-0 victory over West Brom last month, but since that game, Wimmer has only appeared twice for Spurs in their succeeding six matches.

He was once again left on the bench for the trip to Gent on Thursday, with Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier preferred, yet starts against both Aston Villa and Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup this term suggests that he’ll get an opportunity at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Josh Onomah

Midfielder Josh Onomah has played just 16 minutes of Premier League football this season, despite being in and around the side for much of the campaign.

He last appeared in the league all the way back in December in their 3-0 victory over Hull City at White Hart Lane, and has since then only featured in their FA Cup wins over Aston Villa and Wycombe Wanderers.

With Spurs in need of victory against Gent next Thursday to progress in the Europa League, Pochettino is likely to rest several first teamers against Fulham, so expect 19-year-old Onomah to get a fourth start of the season at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Vincent Janssen

Dutch striker Vincent Janssen has still yet to get going in English football following his summer move from AZ.

The 22-year-old has netted just four goals in 27 appearances in all competitions this term, and all four of them have come from the penalty spot.

Janssen struggled to deputise in Harry Kane’s absence back at the start of the campaign, and has since seen first team opportunities restricted, as he hasn’t started a Premier League match since their 3-2 victory over West Ham back on November 19.

However, a goal and an assist in their comeback win over Wycombe in the fourth round of the FA Cup suggests that he has earned a place in the side against Fulham, and Pochettino will expect a good display from the Dutchman at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
