Of all the terms bandied about in football ‘roller coaster’ is arguably the most overused one as anytime a club goes through a sticky patch or overachieves its often compared to the ups and downs of a fairground ride, when in fact it’s not quite so dramatic.
When it comes to Portsmouth F.C though, the term doesn’t do them justice as they’ve gone from Premier League stalwarts, to FA Cup winners to the brink of extinction in less than a decade. This season has seen some light at the end of the long dark Pompey tunnel as Paul Cook’s side sit third in League Two, a healthy eight points clear of fourth placed Luton Town.
Even for a club as famed for pulling disaster from the brink of success, it seems Pompey are destined to be playing in football’s third tier next season, the real question being ‘when’ will they achieve promotion rather than ‘if’ and fans have been taking to social media to discuss if Monday’s clash at Notts County could be time:
A win at @Official_NCFC on Easter Monday and @LutonTown drop points at @mansfieldtownfc will seal #Pompey‘s promotion to @SkyBetLeagueOne. pic.twitter.com/octMCsB8cs
