Premier League Team of the Week: Aston Villa, Everton and Leicester City stars impress in Matchweek 12

Premier League Matchweek 12 delivered some great goals and surprise results.

Tottenham Hotspur stay top of the table despite drawing at Crystal Palace as Liverpool and Chelsea also dropped points.

Jurgen Klopp’s defending champions were held 1-1 by Fulham while Frank Lampard’s Blues fell to a 1-0 defeat at Everton.

Elsewhere, Arsenal’s woes continued as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Burnley while Manchester United and Manchester City played out a goalless draw in a pretty forgettable derby at Old Trafford.

At the bottom, Sheffield United are still searching for their first win after an 11th defeat in 12 matches at Southampton, while West Brom sit five points above the Blades as they also lost at Newcastle United.

So, following the latest round of fixtures, who were the top individual performers?

Here’s Shoot’s Premier League Team of the Week…

GK: Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa)

The Argentine has been a super signing from Arsenal for Villa. At Wolves on Saturday, Martinez saved very well from Daniel Podence and Leander Dendoncker as the Villans snatched a late 1-0 win. As well as his eye-catching saves, the 28-year-old’s distribution and management of his penalty area was first-class.

DF: James Justin (Leicester City)

The flying full-back put in a faultless display in Leicester’s 3-0 win over Brighton. Justin’s energetic runs forward caused the Seagulls all kinds of problems as he created a number of chances for his teammates.

DF: Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa)

The 23-year-old is starting to look the real deal in the Premier League. Had a terrific opening half to stop Wolves in their tracks. Made some well timed challenges and – as ever – was composed on the ball. Most notably stopped Fabio Silva from tapping home after his shot had hit the post and rebounded out.

DF: Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton)

The big Dane has been hugely impressive for Southampton this term and was so again in the comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield United. Dominant in his defensive duties but also pinpoint accurate with the ball at his feet, the 28-year-old is becoming a real fan favourite at St Mary’s.

DF: Bed Godfrey (Everton)

Godfrey continued in an unfamiliar left-back role against Chelsea and put in a top performance to help end the London side’s unbeaten run. Was incredibly solid against the visitor’s star-studded attack as the Toffees secured a big 1-0 win.

MF: Bobby Decordova-Reid (Fulham)

Fulham look to be adapting to top-flight football after a difficult start and showed their improvement with a 1-1 draw against champions Liverpool. Decordova-Reid was busy all afternoon on the right side of midfield and scored his side’s goal with a fantastic hit across Alisson.

MF: James Maddison (Leicester City)

After a quiet spell by his high standards, James Maddison put in a star display against Brighton. The England playmaker scored his first brace for the Foxes which included a lovely curling left-footed strike for the second goal.

MF: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

The Saints skipper has been one of the best midfielders in the league this term and carried on his brilliant form against Sheffield United. Although he didn’t score or create any of his side’s three goals, his pressing and set-piece delivery again stood out. In the match, Ward-Prowse created a season’s best four chances.

MF: Josh Brownhill (Burnley)

Sean Dyche’s Burnley are famous for their work rate and that was on show as they piled more woe on Arsenal with a 1-0 win at the Emirates. Brownhill epitomised what the Clarets are all about as he was all over the park to help the Clarets move out of the bottom three. The midfielder was also the player to jump in front of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang which resulted in the striker scoring the decisive own goal.

FW: Che Adams (Southampton)

After a difficult first season at Southampton, Che Adams has proved he certainly has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League. The striker’s all round play and work rate against former club Sheffield United was exemplary. Adams also netted his fourth of the campaign which put the Saints in front on 34 minutes.

FW: Ademola Lookman (Fulham)

It didn’t quite work out for Ademola Lookman at Everton but since returning to the Premier League with Fulham he’s certainly added a new dimension to Scott Parker’s side. The 23-year-old was superb against Liverpool as he tormented Trent Alexander-Arnold and set-up Decordova-Reid for the goal.
