Marouane Fellaini will serve the final match of his suspension as Manchester United go in search of their third consecutive victory in this Saturday lunchtime fixture.

Phil Jones will also be absent for the hosts, for whom Memphis Depay will be looking to build on his two European goals in midweek. Wayne Rooney will be desperate to open his account for the season after receiving criticism for his display in the win at Villa Park last Friday.

Old Trafford has not been a happy hunting ground for Newcastle in recent years – the Magpies have won there just once since 1972.

Moussa Sissoko has been described as a “huge doubt” after he limped off in last weekend’s defeat to Swansea, meaning the door could be open for new arrival Florian Thauvin to make his debut after signing from Marseille for £12m this week.

Steve McClaren – who served as assistant manager at Manchester United for three years and was in the dugout for their treble success in 1999 – is still searching for his first win as Newcastle boss, and will have to cope without the suspended Daryl Janmaat. Chancel Mbemba or Steven Taylor are likely to line up at right-back in a re-shuffled back four.
