Profile: Manchester City’s new £37m man, Leroy Sane

Manchester City have become synonymous with making big-money signings in the past few years, and their latest one is a fully-fledged Germany international – Leroy Sane.

The 20-year-old has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, becoming Pep Guardiola’s third major signing of the summer.

Shoot takes a closer look at the attacking midfielder.

Where did it all start for Sane?

Sane was born in Essen, north-western Germany, and football was always likely to be his future career path as his father, Souleymane, was a professional player and Senegal international.

Souleymane was raised in France but came to Germany through his service in the French army, before settling in Wattenscheid. As a result, Leroy has dual German and French citizenship.

He began playing football in 2001 for the Wattenscheid youth team, before making the move to Schalke in 2005 before his 10th birthday.

What happened next?

After three years in the Schalke youth side, Sane made the move to Bayer Leverkusen, however in 2011 he re-joined Schalke, and he signed his first professional contract in March 2014.

He made his first-team debut for the Bundesliga outfit in a month later, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 defeat to Stuttgart, which turned out to be his only appearance of the campaign.

The following season saw more game time for the attacker though, and he scored his first Schalke goal in December 2014, but it was to no avail as his club suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Cologne.

However, he did have a memorable moment by scoring the winner in a 4-3 success against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Champions League, before scoring in his first league start four days later in March 2015.

Did he push on again in the 2015/16 season?

He certainly did. The winger made 43 appearances in all competitions for Schalke, netting nine goals in the process, and attracted interest from a number of top clubs around Europe with his dynamic performances for the German outfit, including current employers Manchester City.

What will he bring to City?

The 20-year-old is known for his dribbling ability, and his pace and confidence on the ball mean that he is able to play on either wing, as well as behind the striker.

His impressive goal tally last term, predominantly from wide areas, also show that he has an eye for goal and being in the right place at the right time.

How has he performed for Germany?

After scoring five goals in just six appearances for the Germany Under-21s, Sane was promoted to the senior team in 2015, picking up his first cap in a 2-0 friendly defeat to France.

He was then picked in Joachim Low’s 23-man squad for Euro 2016, where they were again beaten by the French in the semi-finals of the competition.
