Puel must give these 3 Southampton players a chance against Hapoel

Southampton will look to make it two wins out of two in the Europa League when they travel to Israel to face Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday.

Claude Puel’s side have hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks since he registered his first win in charge against Sparta Prague in this competition – the Saints have got the better of Swansea City and West Ham, and also beat Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third round.

They also haven’t conceded a goal since that last-gasp Santi Cazorla penalty for Arsenal on September 10, and are beginning to look like the Southampton side that we’ve become accustomed to in recent seasons.

However, they face an Israeli side that pushed Celtic all the way in their Champions League qualifying play-off back in August, eventually succumbing to Brendan Rodgers’ side 5-4 on aggregate.

Since then though they have lost just once, and recorded an impressive 2-0 away win at Inter Milan two weeks ago.

With a tricky trip to Leicester City on Sunday, Puel may consider making some changes to his starting eleven on Thursday, so here are THREE players who should be given a chance against Hapoel…

James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse is a very highly-rated footballer, not just at Southampton but amongst various football fans around the country.

Yet, the England Under-21 captain has only made one Premier League start so far this season, and that was back on the opening day at home to Watford.

He staked a claim for a first team spot though after coming off the bench to net the third in a 3-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, and will likely get the opportunity to build on that cameo at the London Stadium in Israel on Thursday.

Jake Hesketh

Jake Hesketh started the season as an Under-23 player for Southampton, despite two appearances in the Premier League in 2014, including his first professional start away at Burnley.

He played in the Under-23’s away win over Charlton Athletic on August 30 yet, since then, he has slowly made his way closer to the first team, and was given a chance against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup last week.

And it was one he duly took, netting the second in their comfortable 2-0 win over Alan Pardew’s side.

Subsequently, he was named on the bench for the trip to West Ham and, although he was an unused substitute, he may feel that he will get another first team chance sooner rather than later.

Maya Yoshida

Although Yoshida is not a part of Puel’s first choice central defensive partnership, the manager will want to know that, if Jose Fonte and/or Virgil van Dijk get injured, he can rely upon the Japanese international to do a job.

As a result, he needs time on the pitch to do so, and should get the opportunity on Thursday.

In the three games Yoshida has started for the Saints this season, they’ve conceded just once, and that was to Watford on the opening day last month.

The 28-year-old has been solid throughout his four years at St Mary’s, but needs minutes on the pitch to be ready to deputise in the Premier League if called upon.
