Puel should give these 3 Southampton stars a chance against West Brom

Southampton will look to back up their fine win over Crystal Palace in midweek with three points at West Brom on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

Claude Puel’s side rose to ninth after seeing off the Eagles 3-1 at St Mary’s on Wednesday night, with goals from Nathan Redmond, Maya Yoshida, and James Ward-Prowse securing an important three points for the Saints in their quest for a fourth successive top half finish in the Premier League.

And with three wins in their last five league games, they’ll be confident of getting a positive result away at Tony Pulis’ West Brom on Saturday.

The Baggies suffered a 2-0 loss to Watford in midweek, and it means that they go into Saturday’s clash at the Hawthorns having won just one of their last five games, albeit that was their impressive 3-1 success over Arsenal on March 18.

Nonetheless, Puel’s Saints will fancy their chances of recording back-to-back league wins, yet the Frenchman may look to make some changes to his side on Saturday.

Thus, here are THREE Southampton stars who deserve a chance against West Brom…

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Manager Puel admitted in his pre-match press conference that midfielder Steven Davis is a doubt for the trip to the Hawthorns on Saturday.

And that could mean that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is recalled to the starting line-up for his 12th Premier League start of the campaign.

The 21-year-old moved from Bayern Munich last summer but hasn’t quite nailed down a place in Puel’s side, starting 18 matches in all competitions this term, and 13 from the substitute’s bench.

Hojbjerg is clearly an important member of the squad at St Mary’s and has performed well when called upon, so should Davis fail to recover from injury, the Denmark international is likely to deputise against the Baggies.

Josh Sims

West Brom have been excellent defensively for much of the season so far, so Southampton may need to look to something different in a bid to break the Baggies down on Saturday.

And that could mean that youngster Josh Sims gets an opportunity.

The 20-year-old burst onto the scene with an assist just one minute into his Saints debut against Everton back in November, although hasn’t started a Premier League game since then – instead he’s made four substitute appearances.

A few starts in their domestic cup runs suggests that he remains an important part of the squad at St Mary’s, and Puel could call upon his pace and trickery in a bid to prise open the West Brom defence on Saturday.

Jay Rodriguez

Should Puel want to change and freshen things up in the attacking department, he could call upon former Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez against the Baggies.

The 27-year-old started the weekend draw with Bournemouth but was dropped to the bench against Crystal Palace in midweek, and given that the Saints netted three goals in a game for only the third time at home this term, Puel may keep faith with Nathan Redmond and Shane Long.

However, Rodriguez clearly has quality in the final third, and has scored four goals in just 742 minutes of Premier League action this season, which is more than Long and in less minutes.

Thus, the one-time England international could get the nod at the Hawthorns.
