European Champions Spain get their World Cup campaign underway when they face Cape Verde in Group H on Monday.

Luis de la Fuente’s side beat England to win the Euros in Germany two years ago, and were favourites heading into this summer’s tournament.

For the first time in history, Spain’s World Cup squad doesn’t include a single player from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Now, though, it has emerged that the Spanish side have reached an agreement to sign one member of Spain’s squad, who is currently playing in the Premier League.

As per journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid have reach an agreement to sign left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.

Cucurella is currently in North America preparing for Spain’s game against Cape Verde, but Romano claims that there is now a full agreement in place between all parties with the player set to move after the World Cup.

Cucurella, 27, joined the Blues from Brighton and Hove Albion back in 2022, during a period of significant recruitment at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Todd Boehly and Clearlake.

The Spaniard endured a difficult debut season in west London but has since built a reputation as one of the best full-backs in Europe.

In total the defender has now played 163 times for Chelsea across all competitions, and he was part of the side that won both the Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup during the 2024/25 campaign.

Romano claims that Jose Mourinho – who made a shock return to Real last week – has identified the player as the left-back that he wishes to add to his squad, and the player himself has agreed to the move.

Cucurella’s contract with Chelsea is set to run until the end of the 2028/29 campaign, but Romano claims that he will leave the Blues to join Real Madrid following the World Cup.
