Review: 5 things we learnt from Leicester v Southampton

Off the back of another historic Champions League win, Premier League champions, Leicester City were back in Premier League action on Sunday as they hosted an in form Southampton side who, going into the game were undefeated in five games across all competitions.

Despite a mammoth trip to Israel in the Europa League on Thursday the visitors showed no signs of tiring as they took control of the game for large spells, and although they could not break the deadlock, a point away at the champions is not to be scoffed at.

A sixth clean sheet on the bounce for the South Coast side should be enough to keep the travelling fans happy for their trip back down to Hampshire, whilst there will be questions to ask in the home end with their side without a win in two league games.

A point keeps the Saints in the top half and with European football and EFL Cup action still to come before Christmas, the point at the King Power could prove crucial come the turn of the year.

So, another title looks a long way away for the Foxes but the Saints keep defying their doubters, here are FIVE things we learned from Leicester v Southampton…

The Fox Has Lost its Bite

If anyone has seen the Leicester City side from last season, could they please contact a Mr. Ranieri at, King Power Stadium, Filbert Way, Leicester.

After a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Man United last weekend, you would have expected some sort of reaction in the league from the hosts, however, the champions looked lacklustre compared to last season’s antics.

Jamie Who?

As if to almost echo the league performances of the entire side, Leicester’s poster boy from last season, Jamie Vardy has also disappeared off the map.

The England striker looks a shadow of himself from his awe inspiring campaign last season and will need to come up with something special soon if Ranieri’s side want to return to the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Saints Still Need a Striker

As the old saying goes; form is temporary but class is permanent. Well, he may still know how to score put is seems as if Charlie Austin’s hot steak may be coming to an end.

The former QPR man, who had scored five goals in four outings before this weekend, despite all his efforts, could not find the back of the net. And, without another hitman since the departure of Graziano Pelle on the pitch, the rest of the side looked rather bereft of ideas.

Same Old Saints

Although they couldn’t get the win it was another highly impressive display from Southampton who, aside from a scare in the first half, never looked in real trouble without the ball.

Saints fans will probably be tired of hearing this but here goes, just how do they do it? Yet another crop of top talent left St. Mary’s over the summer, along with their manager, and yet here they are, still fighting and still impressing.

The Clappers Must Go

The Leicester fans may love them, but when you’re top of the table you can get away with alost anything as a fan.

However, when you’re struggling for form the frankly deafening and annoying clappers are rather embarrassing, someone needs to tell the board.
