Wayne Rooney has openly admitted that he sees his future in midfield, after an impressive display in the Red Devils’ 3-1 victory at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United and England captain scored his 100th United goal at Old Trafford in their final rearranged Premier League game of the season, as he started alongside Michael Carrick in a deeper midfield role.

The 30-year-old said: “Sometimes you have to make choices in your career and at the moment it’s better for me to play deeper.

“It could be a bit different for England where I could still be the striker but probably next season that’s where I see myself playing.”

As well as netting the opener against the Cherries, Rooney also got an assist to his name on Tuesday night, with a delightful clipped ball into Ashley Young, who scored United’s third of the night as they ended the campaign in fifth position.
