SHOOT’s Best XI: 2018 Premier League Summer Signings

With less than two weeks remaining until the 2018-19 Premier League season kicks off, each top-flight club has just days left to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.

The 2018 summer transfer window closes on Thursday, August 9, at 17:00pm.

As ever, Premier League giants have been splashing the cash, whilst last term’s strugglers and this year’s newly promoted sides have made vital additions in a bid to preserve their top-flight status come May.

With just 12 days left to make any additional acquisitions to their squad, SHOOT have scrolled through all the summer signings so far this transfer window, and created our best starting XI ahead of the new season!

With 80 signings to discuss, debate and select, a number of high-profile additions have been omitted from SHOOT‘s Best XI; including Arsenal’s captures of goalkeeper Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) and midfielder Lucas Torreira (Sampdoria), Everton’s initial £40m deal for Richarlison (Watford), Liverpool’s £43.7m signing Fabinho (AS Monaco), Riyad Mahrez’s (Leicester City) £60m switch to Manchester City, Manchester United’s £52m signing of Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk), Felipe Anderson’s (Lazio) club-record £35m move to West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderer’s smart £5m deal for AS Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Everton splashed out an initial £40m to land Watford winger Richarlison.

Anyway, moving on with our Select Star XI, we have gone for a traditional 4-4-2 formation. Do you agree with our selection? Or, which player(s) do you think we have missed out?

Comment below with your tactical suggestions!

Goalkeeper: Alisson (Liverpool)

Liverpool splashed out a world record £67m to land AS Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who kept 22 clean sheets in 49 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit last season.

Defender: Ryan Fredericks (West Ham United)

West Ham snapped up the Fulham right-back on a free transfer on a four-year deal following the expiration of his contract at Craven Cottage.

The 25-year-old provided nine assists in 48 games for Fulham last term, helping Slavisa Jokanovic’s side defeat Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final back in May to secure promotion to the Promised Land.

Defender: Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal)

Arsenal sealed the £17.7m signing of Greece international centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos at the start of this month.

The 30-year-old netted three goals in 43 outings for German side Borussia Dortmund in 2017-18.

Defender: Diogo Dalot (Manchester United)

Manchester United may have finally solved their long-term right-back problem, after bringing in Portugal Under-21 international full-back Diogo Dalot.

The 19-year-old cost The Red Devils around £19m, and manager Jose Mourinho has described him as the “best young full-back in Europe”.

Defender: Willy Boly (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Wolves have secured the permanent signing of centre-back Willy Boly for a fee believed to be £10m.

The 27-year-old scored three goals in 37 appearances in all competitions last season, whilst on loan from FC Porto, and was named in the Championship Team of the Season, after lifting the league title last term.

Midfielder: Jean Michaël Seri (Fulham)

Newly promoted Fulham reportedly fought off interest from the likes of Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund to land Ivory Coast international midfielder Jean Michaël Seri from OGC Nice for a club-record fee of £25m.

The central defensive midfielder was close to sealing a mega money move to La Liga champions FC Barcelona only last summer!

Midfielder: Naby Keïta (Liverpool)

Liverpool agreed a deal to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keïta LAST August, but was only officially unveiled as a Red earlier this month, following his £52.75m arrival.

The 23-year-old Guinea intentional remained with the Bundesliga outfit for the 2017-18 campaign, where he scored nine goals in 39 games overall.

Midfielder: James Maddison (Leicester City)

Having lost creative winger Riyad Mahrez to Manchester City this summer, Leicester City softened the blow with the £22m arrival of Championship starlet James Maddison, 21.

The England Under-21 international midfielder netted 15 goals and provided 11 assists in 49 games in all competitions for Norwich City last season.

Midfielder: Jorginho (Chelsea)

Beating Premier League champions Manchester City to his signature, Chelsea landed Italy international Jorginho from Napoli in a deal worth up to £57m in mid-July.

One of only two signings at Stamford Bridge so far this summer, besides veteran goalkeeper Robert Green (free transfer), the 26-year-old defensive midfielder has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with The Blues.

Forward: Andre Schurrle (Fulham)

Newly promoted Fulham feature again in SHOOT‘s Best XI, having completed the loan signing of former Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup winning forward will spend the next two campaigns on loan at Craven Cottage, having joined from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

The 27-year-old found the back of the net just three times for Dortmund last season, but scored 14 goals for Premier League rivals Chelsea between 2013 and 2015.

Forward: Raul Jimenez (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

And finally, fellow newcomers Wolves have similarly bolstered their front line with the season-long loan signing of Mexico international striker Raul Jimenez from Benfica.

The 27-year-old, who played twice at the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia this summer, became boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s first summer signing after scoring eight goals for Benfica last term.
