While Sheffield United continue to look good for promotion from League One, Scunthorpe’s form has been concerning as they failed to win in February, and that has really opened up the battle for second place.

The Iron lost three and drew their three other games to give those below them a chance of getting into the top two, and Fleetwood Town obliged on the first weekend of March by beating Scunthorpe 2-0 at Glanford Park to leapfrog Graham Alexander’s men.

The battle for promotion is certainly one to keep an eye on, with any side upwards of Walsall in 13th fancying a shot at the play-offs, while Oxford United and Rochdale both have form and games in hand in their bids to gatecrash the top six.

At the bottom, Swindon, Oldham and Bury have at last put some more points on the board, although the former are still very much in danger of dropping into League Two alongside Chesterfield and Coventry, who seem cut adrift with time running out.

In what was a frantic month of football in England’s third tier, here are Shoot!’s League One Player, Manager and Goal of the Month awards…

Player of the Month: Billy Sharp (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United only failed to score once in February – and the same is true of striker Billy Sharp.

The 31-year-old centre forward found the net five times in all to take his season total to 23, and it’s not even Spring yet.

Opening the scoring in the rout of AFC Wimbledon was followed up with the winner at Peterborough, an important equaliser in the top of the table clash with Scunthorpe, and a brace against Bolton.

It’s not a surprise that the Blades are the league’s leading scorers as Billy continues to keep them sharp.

Manager of the Month: Uwe Rosler (Fleetwood Town)

Is there any stopping Fleetwood Town?

Uwe Rosler’s side were unbeaten in 2017 come the end of February as their meteoric rise from non-league looks like it could be writing another chapter. Scunthorpe’s form has opened the door to automatic promotion and Town are taking full advantage.

Two draws and three wins was the sum total of their efforts throughout the month, including a vital 2-1 victory over fellow promotion-hopefuls Bradford on Valentine’s day.

There’s certainly a lot of love in the air for Rosler at Highbury, and he has the Cod Army swimming in the right direction.

Goal of the Month: Andrew Tutte (Chesterfield v BURY)

Bury deepened Chesterfield’s relegation worries with a 2-1 win at the Proact Stadium on February 18, but it needed a stunning Andrew Tutte strike to get them back into the contest.

The hosts took the lead after 32 minutes courtesy of Kristian Dennis’ effort, but it was Tutte’s spectacular right-footed strike from 25 yards which got them back on level terms just ten minutes from time.

The visitors went on to win the game in added time thanks to George Miller’s goal, but it was Tutte who helped inspire the turnaround thanks to his memorable effort.
